MODERN JAZZ CLASSICS HAVE AN APPOINTMENT IN TERRASSA

The first swords of international jazz and the best jazz forged in Catalonia will gather for the Festival's three weeks. The city will be transpiring jazz from the 6th to the 24th of March, with the main concerts held at Nova Jazz Cava and Centre Cultural and more shows during the traditional Picnic Jazz at Parc de Vallparadís. There will be up to 60 concerts and parallel activities reaching every corner of the city and the surrounding area, with concerts also in the towns of Matadepera, Vacarisses and Viladecavalls.

The Terrassa Festival is true to the essence of jazz, and its evolution runs parallel to this genre's history. This year we present the current totems of jazz: artists with unique personalities and visionary masters who lead the way. In other words, the modern jazz classics, the synonym of contemoraneity.

Kenny Barron, key artist and extraordinary pianist, is the 2019 Jazzterrasman Award recipient and will be presenting his new album at a concert with his quintet. David Murray is a true trailblazer who combines both primitive and avant-garde jazz. Ernie Watts masterfully interacts with a wide spectrum of sounds: from rock (Stones, Zappa) to Quartet West's most exquisite jazz. He will be presenting his last work both as a band leader and composer. Under Wayne Shorter's light, drum player and composer Terri Lyne Carrington is one of the three co-leaders of The Children of the Light together with Danilo Pérez and John Patitucci. Also, South Korean singer Youn Sun Nah breaks the mold with her unique personality and openness to multiple tendencies. On her Catalan debut, she will be presenting her new band and album at Centre Cultural Terrassa and unveiling an interesting musical multiculturalism.

Twinning between styles is well represented by bluesman Bernard Allison's debut at the Festival presenting his new album, and by jazz fusion trio Dean Brown feat. Dennis Chambers & Hadrien Feraud. These are two electrifying and eclectic concerts combining jazz, blues and rock.

Jazz's most iconic artists have been performing in our city for the last 60 years. The 60th anniversary of Amics de les Arts Jazz Club and Joventuts Musicals will be celebrated together with the 25th anniversary of Nova Jazz Cava. The enthusiasm, perseverance and work of many people have contributed to making jazz performances a reality. “A trip through the 60th anniversary: pictures and debate” + Terrassa Jazz Ensemble are a celebration of this journey.

Other stars are inspiring the 38th edition of the Festival with their music. These emblematic musicians have motivated two local new initiatives. Firstly, Remembering Roy Hargrove is a personal tribute to the recently deceased jazzman and 2010 Jazzterrasman Award recipient, to whom this year's Festival is dedicated, by five top Catalan artists. Secondly, Impact: “Charles Tolliver's music” brings a new interpretation of the California trumpet player's work by an excellent local band. In addition to these two performances, the Festival will be hosting a new duet's first concert by Santi de la Rubia & Roger Mas.

The current Catalan scene is well reflected by the new releases: Big Mama and her 30's Band celebrate 30 years of music with her new album Party Life, Dani Nel·lo presents his new CD Los Saxofonistas Salvajes Vol.II, and WOM's Collective's female artists brings about their new recording defending women's creative talent.

Another great musician and composer, Meritxell Nedderman, introduces her new electric band, and top vocal jazz artist Laura Simó will be presenting “Spring is here”. Young talent is well represented by band leaders Rita Payés and Marina Tuset. And talented youth are the students participating at the JazzJove Non Stop Marathon, with three Catalan music schools included in an international lineup of artists.

And let's not forget Shakin'All introducing Rachel Rafsizafy, Lluís Coloma Trio, Víctor de Diego Quintet with a luxury guest —Rick Margitza—, Jazz Pretenders, Cannonball Crew, Los Fumero, Txell Sust & August Tharrats Trio, “Swing Paradís”, La Locomotora Negra, Joan Vinyals Band, Four Litlle Birds... and up to 240 artists participating in concerts and parallel activities —exhibitions, talks, movies, presentations, jam sessions, swing workshop, competitions and gastronomic routes— taking place in different venues during the Festival.
