A night featuring two sessions with presentations of albums recorded on the Barcelona-based label Fresh Sound New Talent. An international combination of talents featuring Catalan/French quintet Five In Orbit and the septet headed up by Italian/Catalan composer and bassist Giulia Valle.
Five in Orbit are premiering their second album, ‘Freaks’ (FSNT, 2010), a more communicative and enlightening recording than the previous one, featuring original compositions, though continuing their fresh and personal approach. With this new work they have gone more deeply into the textures of sound thanks to the use of bass clarinet, conch shells, whistles and percussion. Isabel Coixet has said that ‘Freaks’ is “an album/door: the threshold of an intimate, misty universe, melancholy yet powerful, tactile and ethereal”. As well as updating their repertoire the band has also introduced new members, including Nicolas Rageu on bass and Luc Isenmann on drums. They acknowledge influences from Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Roland Kirk, John Cage, Sun Ra, PJ Harvey, Radiohead and Abdullah Ibrahim.
