Jazzterrasman 2010! Roy Hargrove Quintet
This year, Jazz Terrassa wanted to distinguish Roy Hargrove, who will become the eighteenth Jazzterrassman, the youngest musician to receive this honour. In the words of the nominee, “It’s always great when people recognise your work, and if on top of that the recognition comes from a jazz festival...What more can I say? It’s fantastic! (Interview with Quim Cabeza, published in issue 30 of Revista Jaç, February/March 2010).
Aged 40, this overwhelmingly talented Texan trumpeter with a career spanning two decades behind him is premiering his fourteenth album as a leader, ‘Emergence’ (Universal, 2009), recorded with a big band of nineteen musicians, a studio work that is difficult to take on tour. In Terrassa he will be celebrating this award by a concert with the quintet that has been backing him recently in what will be his one and only performance in Spain, in the Nova Jazz Cava.
A disciple of Wynton Marsalis and winner of two Grammys, he is regarded as one of the best jazz trumpeters on the international scene. Hargrove moves between traditional jazz, funk and hip hop, and recognises influences from gospel, soul and Latin jazz.
This will be the seventh time he has performed in Terrassa, the sixth at the Festival; his last appearance was six years ago with his other band RH Factor, a heterodox line-up that gives him more licence than a quintet with which he combines jazz with funk, groove, funk, hip hop and rhythm & blues.
